"Bienvenue chez les Ch tis" is the story of a young French-Canadian who moves to rural France to teach English. Forced to live with the locals, he struggles with his new identity as an 'alien'. His friends are amused by him, but they don't judge him for it. One day, after being pushed too far by some changes in his life, he finally explodes. The film concludes with a montage of pictures that show how far he has come - and where he will go from here. This movie follows one man's struggle with adapting to life in rural France. The son of a Canadian father and a French mother, he has never been good at speaking French, and the only time he has ever lived in France was as a child. But now he is back in France, living with his Aunt and Uncle and attending the local high school. The first half of the movie is slow-paced, but this is because it takes some time to introduce the characters. However, as soon as Philippe returns to school following his expulsion from Canada, there is some action. Although some aspects of the story are predictable (the main character's love interest for example), many things are not. The film is original because it doesn't use the usual concept of a love story to progress the plot, i.e., instead of having to choose between two women, Philippe finds himself having to choose between two countries. The film follows his struggle to adjust to life in France after being expelled from Canada, and it also follows his relationship with his first love interest - a French girl called Margot. The first half of the film has a lot of comedy based on slapstick and is full of funny one-liners written by the screenwriter. For example, during their first meeting with the aunt and uncle, the three friends joke that they're going to live with wolves. The second half of the film is more dramatic because it follows Philippe's attempts to fit in. He gradually becomes obsessed with his work at the school, which takes up most of his time. He also attempts to befriend some of his classmates but doesn't quite fit in with them either. Too shy to approach them himself, he eventually instructs his friend Jean-Luc to do so for him. Jean-Luc takes this as an opportunity to make fun of his friend, which makes the audience question Philippe's character. However, when his friends go out drinking one evening and end up in a fight, Philippe is the one who helps them out. This shows that although he can be quite awkward and socially inept, he is also sensitive to the problems of others - something that makes his character likeable. When Philippe finally cracks under pressure from Jean-Luc and ends up yelling at him in class, it appears as though it might all be over for him. His love interest Margot decides that their relationship is over, but then two new characters emerge: Alexandre and Christine.
